Chain of Sorrow • John Prine

OBJECTIVE Using the lyrics of the John Prine song “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)”, I created a series of narrative pieces using various parts of the text and conceptual pairings.

CONCEPT Life is inherently fragile, which in part is what the song discusses. Things get bruised, hurt, and die, but we have to go on until we don’t. Life strives to exist in spite of it all. Whether we exist in anger, sorrow, contentment, or happiness, it is up to us.

VISUALS I wanted the visuals to feel dreamy, hopeful, and bittersweet. I used a combination of type, natural botanicals that I scanned, and layering transparencies.
